PURPOSE:To attain display having superior display quality by setting an optical anisotropic layer between a polarizer and an analyzer so that the major axis of the index ellipsoid is oriented to a direction nearly perpendicular to the direction of the major axis of an index ellipsoid having a mean molecular axis in a dark state. CONSTITUTION:An optical anisotropic layer is set between a polarizer 3a and an analyzer 4a as a pair of polarizing plates so that the major axis of the index ellipsoid is oriented to a direction nearly perpendicular to the direction of the major axis of an index ellipsoid having a mean molecular axis in a dark state. The visual angle characteristics of an index ellipsoid derived from a ferroelectric liq. crystal layer 2a are relieved by those of the index ellipsoid of the optical anisotropic layer and the hue, lightness and other state of display are made uniform independently of the visual angle. |
