This device is placed in a housing (4) arranged on the periphery of the vessel (2) and comprises a flexible refractory material consisting of a stack of asbestos ropes (cords, twines) (8), placed on a refractory bed (hearth) (7) and covered with a glass-fibre fabric (9); the fabric (9) and the ropes (8) closely match the periphery of the floating roof (3) by virtue of their flexibility and resume their initial shape by virtue of their elasticity when the roof (3) is raised so that, after a further lowering of the latter, the fabric and the glass-fibre ropes again provide an excellent leaktight contact with the roof. <IMAGE>
