A wire shaped electron source includes a heating core wire (10), an insulator (11) partially provided on the heating core wire, and an electron emission material (14) provided on the heating core between the insulators. The thickness of the electron emission material is less than the height of the insulators. When the wire shape electron source is installed in the flat panel display device, the insulator prevents the electron emission material from vibrating and thus preventing any contact with the inner wall of the flat panel display device. One possible embodiment of the insulator (11) includes a tungsten core wire (12) with alumina coating (13) or a glass fibre, whilst an application of said electron source is as part of a tubular illumination device as used in copying machines or the like. <IMAGE>
