Mixer for continuously dispersing solids in liquids - utilising internal liquid curtain to prevent solids deposition on mixer surfaces

Mixer comprises a conical mixing chamber (1) with a top cover (2), a circular outlet (3), and a co-axial inlet for solids (4) extending through the top cover. The inlet dia. is increased within the mixing chamber to minimise obstruction caused by solids build-up. The underside of cover (2) carries a circular liquid inlet pipe (5) with downwards directed spray nozzles (6). This spray reduces dust formation in the vicinity of the solids inlet point (4). An enclosed annular chamber (7) surrounds the upper part of the mixing chamber, and is supplied with liquid (e.g. water) via several inlets (8). The lower part of inner wall (9) of the annular chamber (7) is pref. inclined backwards into the mixing chamber, and has a horizontal annular slot (10). Chamber (7) is provided with a constant heat overflow (11) above the level of slot (10). The width and location height of slot (10) are calculated so as to provide a rotated parabolic shaped liquid shell within the chamber, preventing dry solids from contacting and being deposited on the mixing chamber wall.
