The refuse collecting truck container (5) is closely spaced to the rear of the cab (3) with a flap, or panel, section in the front wall of the container driven inwards by a sevo ram (16) to compact the refuse. The flap perfoms recprocating movements and progressively compacts the refuse. The refuse is tipped into the top of the container, over the compactor. The refuse bins are lifted to the opening by an integral hoist.
