PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition system for an internal combustion engine capable of restraining electrode consumption of a spark plug by restraining excessive supply of spark energy while controlling an ignition command signal outputted from an ECU in the size capable of generating spark discharge by the spark plug. SOLUTION: In this ignition system 1 for the internal, combustion engine of a first embodiment, a spark discharge control circuit 21 operates a spark discharge cutoff circuit 51 when the spark discharge duration Ts calculated on the basis of an operation state of the internal combustion engine passes, and forcibly cuts off the spark discharge by flowing a primary current i1 again to a primary winding L1 of an ignition coil 15. In the ignition system 1 for the internal combustion engine, processing for forcibly cutting off the spark discharge has no influence on a processing load of the ECU 31, and the processing load of the ECU 31 does not increase by the processing for cutting off the spark discharge.
