PURPOSE:To improve heat resistance, durability and chemical resistance and to impart excellent characteristics as a catalyst carrier by forming porous titania ceramics into which TiO2 and SiO2 are incorporated at specific ratios and which is adjusted in pore size to a specific value and has a continuous skeleton structure as a whole. CONSTITUTION:This porous titania ceramics has the continuous skeleton structure as a whole and has 0.5 to 5mum pore size. The TiO2 is incorporated at >=60mol% and the total of the TiO2 and the SiO2 are incorporated therein at >=95mol%. The TiO2 has a crystalline structure. This porous titania ceramics is obtd. by the following method: A batch having the compsn. consisting of 30 to 65mol% M O+M<2>O, 15 to 25mol% TiO2, 10 to 30mol% P2O5, and 10 to 25mol% SiO2 (M<1> is an alkaline metal; M<2> is an alkaline earth metal) is melted and is then cooled to precipitate mainly TiO2 crystals and acid-soluble M<1>M<2>PO4 crystals. The M<1>M<2>PO4 crystals and other acid-soluble components are then extracted and removed by using an acid. |
