In purifying waste water by the activated sludge process, with batchwise addn. of the waste water to the sludge tanks, the waste water is briefly disconnected when the O2 concn. in the tank exceeds an adjustable limiting value. The process is esp. for the aerobic treatment of waste waters with unfavourable C:N:P ratios. The waste water is esp. from the food industry, or from breweries, or is foul water from biogas reactors. The plant has a control system with an O2 electrode in the sludge tank, with the outlet leading to a measurement reinforcer-micro-processor which operates the brief disconnection of the feed on reaching the desired value of the O2 concn. The plant may have an alarm signal which responds if a predetermined O2 concn., which lies appreciably below the desired trip value, is not reached within an adjustable time span after the waste water feed. In the control system, the pH, rH or ion concn. may be measured by a pH-, rH- or ion-sensitive electrode, or by a conductometric or optical sensor, as standard value for the O2 concn. The plant may have a control system with programme control through a time-signal transmitter working on empirical values of the course of the O2 concn. with time. There may be an intermittently operating feed device at the inlet to the sludge tank, and at the outlet a device for equalising the flow rate.
