Subjects detection system for auto focus camera - selectively detects objects in field of view using two image sensors and correlation tester to indicated selected subjects

Two image sensors (13,14) receive light from objects (01,02) in a field of view via different optical paths (L1, L2). Each image sensor produces a group of image data representing object images. A sub-group sensing arrangement (20) produces sub-groups (LD,RD) of image data, each representing image data corresp. to a region of the image field. Pairs of sub-groups are formed, each contg. a sub-group formed from each group of the image data. The correlation of the sequence of overlapping segments of image data in each group of each pair is tested (30) and clusters of segments with high correlation are distinguished (50). A cluster is selected according to defined criteria. USE - Selectively detecting number of objects in field of view for automatic camera focussing and generating data indicating selected subject.
