<p>Apparatus shears foreign matter such as lines, wires, nets and weeds that can entangle and befoul propellers (5), propeller shafts (2), bearings and related structures of propeller-driven, water born vessels. The apparatus shears by cooperative action of a rotating blade (13) that rotates in conjunction with the propeller (5) and a non-rotating blade (12) supported on a non-rotating portion of the vessels (1). In a preferred embodiment, the non-rotating blade (12) is supported on a rope guard (6) that encircles the shaft. A system for simplified installation and alignment includes an intermediate box (11) that supports the non-rotating blade (12). This assembly is temporarily clamped to a rotating blade (13), with the box passing through an aperture (9) in the rope guard (6). Then the box (11) is welded to the rope guard (6) at the aperture (9).</p> |
