<p>The present invention relates to a method of treating or preventing a microbial infection, such as Pneumocystis carinii or Toxoplasma gondii, in a patient comprising administering to the patient an antimicrobially effective amount of p-acetamidobenzoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof so that the microbial infection is inhibited. P-acetamidobenzoic acid or an acceptable salt thereof can be used to treat infections caused by Pneumocystis carinii, Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium species and other microorganisms containing the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase such as most bacteria and some yeasts. The method of the present invention is particularly applicable in situations where the patient is immunosuppressed.</p> |
