<p>PURPOSE:To reduce the cost and size by performing printing operation while putting a print head, where a photosensitive drum which is short in axial length and respective small-sized devices for electrostatic charging, exposure, development, cleaning, and fixation which correspond to the size of the photosensitive drum are mounted, in scanning operation at right angles to the conveying direction of recording paper. CONSTITUTION:While the recording paper is held in a stationary state, the print head 100 is put in forward scanning motion as shown by an arrow B and then image forming operation is performed by rotating the photosensitive drum 2 as shown by an arrow C without making the photosensitive drum 2 slide on the recording paper 1. A print is made by single-time print head scanning to specific width determined by the width of an LED element array at right angles to the conveying direction of the recording paper 1. Then the print head 100 is put in backward scanning motion in the opposite direction from the arrow B and a transfer plate pressing mechanism 80 is reset at this time, so that the recording paper 1 is not pressed. While the print head 100 is in the forward scanning motion or after the forward scanning motion, the recording paper 1 is conveyed by the specific width as a feed pitch and the print head 10 is put in the forward scanning motion to print a next area.
