Process for the detection of a biological substance using a membrane filtration technique. A first ligand, for example an antibody, recognising the said substance is attached onto solid particles not passing through the membrane. A second ligand, recognising the substance, is attached onto a polymer, for example small particles capable of passing through the membrane. A tracer is attached onto the small particles or incorporated into the small particles: for example, they are small coloured or fluorescent particles. A liquid sample to be examined, the small and large particles are introduced into a container equipped with the membrane. When the vacuum is established outside the container, the liquid passes through the membrane but the small particles remain attached to the large particles if the desired biological substance is present. <IMAGE>
