A process for direct casting of a metallic material, such as, for example, steel, for making elongated pieces 2 which substantially form blanks, the cross sections of which correspond relatively closely to the cross sections of the target products, in which process molten metal 1' runs out from a container 1 through an outlet opening 3 and is subsequently collected for solidification. The process is especially characterized in that the molten metal 1' is removed from the outlet opening together with a metallic piece which has essentially the same melting point as the molten metal, which metallic piece, which is guided through the opening 3, lies inserted in the molten metal and moves with it and, as it does so, progressively cools the molten metal 1' and follows the molten metal essentially at the same speed as the piece 5 in a so- called boundary layer. The cross section of the inserted piece 5 is matched to the cross section, demarcated by the outlet opening, of the molten metal, so that the cooling and escorting action of the inserted piece helps in the configuration of the desired boundary layer and in the formation of a net of the solidified metal. The invention also relates to a device for realizing the process. <IMAGE>
