An antibody which can recognize isoforms of the heavy chain of smooth muscle myosin separately from one another is obtained by using as an immunogen an oligopeptide containing that part of isoform SM-1, SM-2 or SM-3 wherein the amino acid sequence is different among them, for example, an amino acid sequence of the C-terminal. This antibody is useful as a reagent for the histological staining of smooth muscles, or the diagnosis of blood vessel disorders, arteriosclerosis, and so forth.
