PURPOSE:To prepare the dimer of a n-olefin, suitable as a raw material of functional fluid, in high yield, by dimerizing a 8-24C n-olefin in the presence of hydrogen fluoride catalyst using a specific amount of a 6-14C (cyclo)parafin as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A 8-24C, pref. 12-18C n-olefin (1pt.vol.) is dimerized in the presence of hydrogen fluoride catalyst using a 6-14C (cyclo)paraffin (0.5- 10pts.vol, pref. 1.0-3.0pts.vol.), e.g. n-octane, n-decane, etc. as a solvent. The reaction temperature is pref. -20-+60 deg.C, esp. 0-40 deg.C. The product has a proper kinetic viscosity and a high viscosity index. Since the formation of fluoroparaffin, which is inevitable in the reaction without solvent, is suppressed by the presence of the solvent, the post-treatment for the removal of fluoroparaffin can be eliminated. |
