The method consists in making the effluent flow through an evaporation/concentration chamber (26) intended to convert a predetermined percentage of effluent into effluent vapour and to produce an effluent concentrate, treating the effluent vapour by converting it into condensate and separating the water contained in the condensate in order to obtain water with a low chemical oxygen demand and a condensate residue, treating the effluent concentrate by making it flow through at least one evaporation/concentration cell (86, 88) in order to convert a predetermined percentage of condensate into concentrate vapour and produce a liquid phase concentrated in hydrocarbons, and by condensing concentrate vapour in order to obtain water with low chemical oxygen demand, rejecting the liquid phase which is concentrated in hydrocarbons and the concentrate residue and recovering the water with low chemical oxygen demand. <IMAGE>
