发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a wide visual field angle, a uniform display and high contrast, and high reliability by orienting and immobilizing a liquid crystalline high polymer which exhibits a nematic phase and a glass phase and is homogeneously oriented and using this polymer as a compensating plate. CONSTITUTION:This element has a liquid crystal cell 15 consisting of a pair of substrate 11, 21 having electrodes 12, 22 and a liquid crystal layer which is sandwiched by the substrates, has positive dielectric anisotropy and is twist oriented approximately horizontally and by directing the spiral axis toward the substrates 11, 21. The element has also polarizing plates 17, 27 which are disposed on the outer side of the substrates 11, 21 and the compensating plate 30 consisting of the liquid crystalline high-polymer layer 35 which is provided between the polarizing bodies 17 and 27 and is homogeneously oriented to exhibit the nematic phase in the liquid crystal state and attains the glass state at the temp. below the liquid crystal transition point as its essential constituting element. Namely, the liquid crystalline high polymer layer 35 is used by orienting this polymer in the liquid crystal state, then cooling the polymer to the glass transition point or below and immobilizing the orienting condition of the liquid crystal state. The liquid crystal display element which has the excellent reliability, has the wide visual field angle and can make the black and white display of the high contrast is obtd. in this way.
