A method for detecting instability in mobile construction plant (excavators, cranes, bulldozers, etc.), as well as a device therefor, are provided. The movement of a machine component (7), which is in direct or indirect contact with the ground, in relation to a fixed portion (1) of the chassis is detected, and the detected movement is transformed into actions which can warn the operator and/or act on the machine's controls in order to prevent any increase in the instability thereof.
