The bascule bridge comprises a leaf (7) swinging between the open and shut positions, and coupled to tail-weights (28) on the opposite side of the hinge axis. The tailweights are on opposite sides of the bridge deck, and are above it when the leaf is shut. The hinge bearings (12) can be above the deck and on opposite sides, the leaf being coupled to them by arms (10).
