The cleaning cassette (1) has a first clenaing element in a recess of one side mounted on a carrier frame (12), and a second similar element in a recess of its opposite side. When the cassette is loaded with the first side leading, the first cleaning element (4) is in contact with the magnetic head, whilst the tape drive roller (3) is in contact with the cassette drive roller (3). This is linked mechanically to the cleaning element and produces a lateral movement of the latter. When the cassette is reverse loaded, the second cleaning element (24) is in contact with the tape drive roller which may be forward- or reverse operated for cleaning. Both cleaning elements are exchangeable and identical, with one side being smooth and the opposite side, which is intended for cleaning the head, including grooves.
