<p>A filter for filtering the combustion air of an internal combustion engine is made by placing an array of pleated paper on a supporting die surface in a position in which the edges of the array extend over a sealant receiving groove. Sealant is dispensed in the groove, and is forced up into the interstices between the pleats in one embodiment by forcing a rigid or semi-rigid supporting member into the groove to displace the sealant into the pleats. The supporting member then remains to provide lateral stability and a support to the filtering media. In the alternate embodiment, the sealant is displaced by forcing compressed gas through a groove in a cover die. The gas may be a foaming agent in case the sealant is a material that requires a foaming agent.</p> |
