<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing isochroman or such in high yield and in high purity, by premixing part of an aromatic compound and the whole amount of an alkylene oxide and reacting the blend with the rest of the aromatic compound in the presence of a catalyst at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:20-80wt% based on the total amount used of an aromatic compound shown by formula II [R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or R1 and R2 are bonded to form benzene ring, naphthalene ring, (1-6C lower alkyl-substituted) 5-6C cycloalkane ring] is premixed with the total amount of an alkylene oxide shown by formula III (R3 is H or lower alkyl) in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent and the blend is gradually added to a mixture of the rest of the aromatic compound shown by formula II, the chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and reaction is carried out at -50-5 deg.C for preferably 1-30hr to give the aimed compound shown by formula I in high yield of >=70%. EFFECT:The amount of by-products formed is small and this method is advantageous in terms of waste water treatment.</p> |
