PURPOSE:To eliminate a change of the output torque into too much or too little in a speed changing process by controlling a reduction quantity of the output torque of an engine in response to largeness of the variable speed of a rotating member with selection of engagement and release pattern for setting the speed. CONSTITUTION:In an automatic transmission A connected to an engine E, a first combination pattern of engagement and release of an engaging means for reducing the variable speed of a rotating member in the case that the speed decided by a means 11 on the basis of the travelling condition given by a detecting unit 10 is a predetermined speed or a second combination pattern of engagement and release for increasing the variable speed in the similar case is selected by a means 12. The command signal is output from a means 13 to an oil pressure control means C so as to set the speed with the selected engagement and release pattern. A means 14 controls so that a lowering quantity of the output of the engine E is reduced when the first combination pattern is selected and so that a lowering quantity of the output torque of the engine E is increased when the second combination pattern is output.
