PURPOSE:To reduce the device capacity, while using a somewhat large liquid crystal light valve so as to secure adequate performance and yield, and to improve the light utilization efficiency by forming a cross sectional shape of the light incident surface of a color separation optical system and a color synthesis optical system to a chopping wave shape. CONSTITUTION:The projector is provided with a light source 60, a color separation optical system 25 for separating a white light from this light source 60 into each color of red, green and blue, liquid crystal light valves 20, 21 and 22 provided in accordance with each color, a color synthesis optical system 26 for synthesizing emitted light beams from these liquid crystal light valves 20, 21 and 22, a reflecting mirror 23 for varying the advance direction of light and a projection lens 24 for projecting the synthesized light onto a screen. Also, the surface shape of color/separating/synthesizing dichroic mirrors 25, 26 and the reflecting mirror 23 is constituted of a chopping wave shape. In such a way, the device capacity can be made small, and light can be made incident effectively on an opening part, therefore, for instance, a bright screen of two folds or above is obtained, and simultaneously, since the light-shielded part is not irradiated with light, photoabsorption in such part is eliminated. |
