One or more optical fibres, twisted to a bunch, can be sheathed by passing through an extruder. The two following chambers are equipped with at least one storage pulley, fitted with an auxiliary drive to compensate the moment of friction. Both chambers are filled with a fluid which is held at a set temp. Specifically, optical fibres AF1, AF2 from the spools VS 11, VS 12, VS 21, VS 22 pass through thread brakes FB1, FB2 and are formed by rollers to a bunch AB. An extruder EX applies a sheath and the strand ABC is passed to a first thermostated chamber TK1 where the strand is run over one or two storage pulleys AS 11, AS 12. The pulley AS 11 is driven by an auxiliary motor just to compensate the moment of friction and not exert any pull. A thickness measuring unit DM is followed by the second thermostated chamber TK 2. One of its pulleys AS 21 again has an auxiliary drive; the use of these pulleys depends on the over-length. Any adhering water is removed by suction WA. A length measuring device LM leads to a crawler-type of withdrawal unit RA for winding up on a disc reel AT or a cable drum TR.
