<p>The invention concerns an aspiration system for single-stage- or two-stage-supercharged internal-combustion engines (1). The aspiration system is designed to be used, with the minimum of modifications, both with single-stage and with two-stage superchargers. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the exhaust-gas-driven turbocharger (2, 2' or 3, 3'), charge-air cooler (15) and air manifold (9), plus the lines (14, 14'; 7, 7') linking the various parts of the system, and the lines (18) to the cylinder-head inlet ports, are used in the same locations for both single-stage and two-stage supercharging. For two-stage supercharging, a high-pressure cooler is used instead of the cooler (15) used for single-stage turbocharging. Instead of the exhaust-driven turbocharger (2, 2') used for single-stage supercharging, a high-pressure exhaust-driven turbocharger (3, 3') is used for two-stage supercharging. In other embodiments, the charge-air cooler (15) is located on the air manifold (9) and the exhaust-driven turbocharger (2, 2' or 3, 3' and 3'', 3''') located on one of the narrow sides of the air manifold (9).</p> |
