Coke-quenching tower, for wet extinguishing of red-hot coke, has a quenching chamber with an outlet flue. In the flue, over its whole cross-section, are frames, casings or racks arranged above one another and in the form of pitched roofs, each with a ridge in the middle; they containg jalousie-fashion, wooden or plastic plates. The flue has a piped water distribution and flushing arrangement for the plates. The plates (7) are of angle section and have openings at the apex for the holding rods (8) to pass through. Variants specify the angle of the plates (pref. between 110 and 130 deg.) and other details of the plates, holding-rods and flushing arrangements. USE/ADVANTAGE - The tower arrangements reduce, in the interests of the environment, the amount of solids discharged to below 20 g/tonne of coke, which is well below the 50 g/tonne of earlier towers.
