Using a process for producing a synthesis gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide, or an apparatus therefor, by means of stepwise, catalytic partial oxidation using a hydrocarbon-containing feedstock gas, the oxidising agent being added in portions to the gas to be treated over the entire length of the catalytic partial oxidation, an appropriate procedure and an appropriate apparatus are provided in the sense of saving oxygen. This is achieved by adding the considerable heat of the gas leaving the catalytic treatment at least partially to the gases passing through the treatment.
