In the thermal and/or redn. treatment of solid, particulate and/or agglomerated charge materials at up to 3500 deg. C in a chain of graphite crucible which passes vertically through a furnace chamber, the novelty is that the charge material is heated in a directly electrically heated vertical strand of stacked graphite crucibles which are moved upwardly through several furnace zones and are surrounded by a countercurrent stream of particulate carbonaceous material. Appts. for carrying out the process is also claimed.
