An apparatus for recording information and tracking signals on magnetic tape (11) includes first and second magnetic heads (HL, HT) for recording the information signals on the tape (11). The heads (HL, HT) are mounted for rotation about an axis for scanning the tape (11) for recording the information signals in successive tracks, and are disposed at respective positions along the axis separated from one another by substantially one track pitch and have respectively different azimuth angles. A third magnetic head (HL min ) records the tracking signals on the tape (11) and is mounted at a position rotationally substantially opposite the first head (HL), and is substantially aligned therewith. The tracking signals are recorded in at least some of the successive tracks with azimuth angles substantially the same as those of the information signals in adjacent ones of the successive tracks. <IMAGE>
