Vehicle exhaust filter for diesel engine - has electrostatic precipitator and mechanical collection of carbon

The filter has an outer cylindrical housing (2) and an inner electrode (5). The outer housing is earthed and sufficient DC voltage is applied to the inner electrode to collect smoke particles. A mechanical device removes collected carbon and transfers it periodically to a collecting bin. No additional filtering is required. The smoke particles are partly charged negative through the flow pattern. A corona electrode can enhance the charge for improved particle collection. The mechanical collection of deposited particles can be a simple scraper, a vibrator, or the carbon can be burnt off periodically. ADVANTAGE - No loss in pressure, no loss in engine efficiency, compact system.
