An electronic device such as a medical monitor (1) operates under program control. If any of these programs needs update, or if new programs or test procedures are to be added to the existing programs, an activating circuit such as box (7) containing a microprocessor and a non-volatile memory is connected (cable (8), connector (9), jack (6)) with the electronic device. The microprocessor contained in box (7) executes a program which basically consists of two modules, the first module establishing communication with the electronic device and the second module transmitting activating code, program code or a test code to the electronic device. It is possible either to "download" new programs or to activate programs which already exist in the electronic device. The first module may comprise steps to ensure that box (7) can only be used with one electronic device and further to ensure that a download is only performed if the electronic device has not yet been activated. <IMAGE>
