A localised heating of the steel is produced in the measurement region (5), followed by a cooling, so as to produce a surface martensitic tempering of the steel without remelting and with a limited carbon diffusion. The hardness of the steel is measured in the superficially tempered region (5) and the local carbon content is deduced from the measured value of the surface hardness.
