Glycine is produced by the reaction of glycolonitrile, carbon dioxide and ammonia in the presence of water, with initial reaction at 80-120 deg C for 0.5-1.0 hr, followed by a main reaction at 150-200 deg C. The glycine formed is then sepd from the reaction mixt, which contains glycolonitrile, hydantoic acid, glycylglycine, hydantoamide, 2,5-diketopiperazine, hydantoin and triglycine. The mother liquor is then recycled to a subsequent run of the reaction.
