The appts. (1) to be protected is connected to a store (2) of extinguishing material whose discharge is instigated by a control unit (3). Siganls from a pressure transducer (4) are digitised (5) for comparison (6) with the result of a calculation involving the selection (7) of some of the incoming signals following one another at a min. spacing of about 1 ms. The five latest pressure measurements are held in a memory (8) and their average value (9) is multiplied (10) by the variable safety factor to obtain a reference value for the comparison (6) with the currently measured pressure. The threshold pressure level is thereby established with a smaller safety margin.
