PURPOSE:To improve the engine output a while preventing an engine from knocking when a request of a driver to maximize the engine output in a specified running region is detected, by setting an intake valve closing timing to a timing in which the engine output is maximized in the detected rotational speed of the engine. CONSTITUTION:A hydraulic drive valve unit 10 closes an intake valve 15 in a predetermined timing by oil pressure supplied from a tank 11 through an oil path 13 by a pump 12. An ECU 14 controls the hydraulic drive valve unit 10 on the basis of various detected signals from various sensors 17-28 for detecting the running condition of an engine. Then, a request of a driver for the engine and engine running parameters including at least the engine rotation are detected by an accelerator opening sensor 22 and a crank angle sensor 21. When the request of the driver to maximize the engine output in a specified running region of the engine is detected, an intake valve 15 closing timing is set to a timing at which the engine output is maximized.
