PURPOSE:To facilitate the focusing onto a desired object by controlling a selecting operation of a focus area in response to a luminance difference in one area among plural areas set in a pattern. CONSTITUTION:A luminance signal in a video signal from an image pickup circuit 4 is inputted to a focus evaluation generating circuit 50 to form evaluation values Va, Vb of large and small areas set in the pattern. Each evaluation value is separated (51, 52) into evaluation values V, V1' and V2, V2' for each two fields and their variances V1, V2, and relative ratio variances r1, r2 are formed and they are fed to a focus motor control circuit 100. The circuit 100 executes the climb-up focusing and monitor of an object change and decides the direction of the focus based on each data in the area by means of the fuzzy inference and selects the area. |
