This device comprises, in combination, a movable thread guide (25) mounted pivotably about a stationary shaft, from which it is distant by a distance substantially equal to the radius of the drum (4), a stationary thread guide (28) aligned with the axis of rotation of the movable thread guide (25), and a support (21) offset relative to the abovementioned axis and intended to enable the operator to present the device with the axis of rotation of the movable thread guide (25) in the extension of that of the drum (4), the movable thread guide (25) being designed to be capable of surrounding the free end of the drum (4) when the device is presented coaxially to this end, and means (26, 35, 40, 41) being provided for allowing the rotational drive of the movable thread guide (25) and the control of this drive. <IMAGE>
