PURPOSE:To provide a stable travel by performing speed change having a steering angle larger than a predetermined value with an intermediate stage selected to give a difference between the change gear ratios of the intermediate and existing speed change stages smaller than that of main speed change stage selected on the basis of an engine load and vehicle speed. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission can be set to a plurality of speed change stages by turning on and off properly respective clutches K1-K4 and brake means B2, B3, and provided with a hydraulic controller C and electronic control unit E as control deviced therefor. On the basis of the output of the controllers C, E, the speed change ratio are set to main forward 5 stages, backward stage and forward 8 stages, backward 1 stage intervened by intermediate stages approximate to geometrical progression. While the speed change stage is selected mainly on the basis of throttle opening and vehicle speed, it is not used for the normal travel when a steering angle is larger than a predetermined value. The speed change is performed by selecting the intermediate stage having a difference between itself and the existing speed change stage smaller than that between itself and the main speed change stage selected on the basis of throttle opening and vehicle speed. |
