PURPOSE:To easily attain the low-loss coupling of optical fibers and a plane optical waveguide by forming a base plate to constitute a plane holder of a silicone wafer or hard ceramic having <=+ or -mum flatness. CONSTITUTION:The base plate 1 is constituted of a supporting member 2 and a supporting frame 3. The supporting member 2 is a square planar member and has broad grooves 2a for housing a part of connector members from a pair of the opposite sides thereof toward the center. The supporting member 2 is made of the hard ceramics and is so finished that the smoothness on the surface attains <=2mum (+ or -1mum); further, the member has metallic patterns 20 for leading out electrodes on the mounting surface thereof. On the other hand, the supporting frame 3 is made of a metal and has a recessed part 3a for housing the supporting member 2 at its center. The precise axial alignment is easily attained in this way and the coupling of the plane optical waveguide and the optical fibers with high efficiency is easily attained. |
