This application relates to a method and apparatus for drying gas by cooling, comprising passing the gas through a gas heat exchanger means in heat exchange contact with cooling fluid, whereby water vapour in the gas forms condensate, the cooling fluid being maintained at a temperature as close as possible to that of a local domestic water supply by heat exchange therewith by passing all the domestic water supply through a main water heat exchanger means in heat exchange contact with the cooling fluid, when the temperature of the cooling fluid is above a predetermined minimum temperature passing a part of the domestic water supply already passed through the main water heat exchanger means through an auxiliary water heat exchanger means, the auxiliary water heat exchanger means being in heat exchange contact with the cooling fluid, and in heat exchange contact with the gas within the gas heat exchanger means, in a second step removing the condensate from the gas heat exchanger means. The apparatus embodies the three heat exchangers in heat exchange contact with the cooling fluid. The gas heat exchanger may be positioned inside or outside the main water heat exchanger, the auxiliary water heat exchanger has two sections one of which is inside the gas heat exchanger in heat exchange contact with the gas, the other section is outside both other heat exchangers. While suitable for drying moist gasses, the apparatus and method are particularly suitable for drying air for pneumatic control systems. |
