An optical device (1) comprises a silicon substrate (2) having waveguiding regions (3, 4, 5 and 6) of a first refractive index completely surrounded laterally by a waveconfining region of lower refractive index doped silicon. This provides waveguides in a substrate without a surface exposed to possible damage. A method of making such a waveguide is also disclosed. |
