Scintillation camera with automatically counterbalanced gantry.

The gantry (10) of a scintillation camera has a counterbalancing means (22) which mechanically counterbalances the gantry about two parallel axes. One axis (13) passes through the detector (12). The other axis (25) is a tilt axis about which a gantry structure which supports the detector may be tilted. The gantry is also counterbalanced about an axis of rotation. The camera has means for detachably securing a collimator (24) to the detector and means for identifying the collimator which is so secured. The counterbalancing means is automatically adjusted to counterbalance the gantry in accordance with the collimator which has been attached to the detector. In the preferred embodiment, the gantry is counterbalanced even when no collimator is secured to the detector.
