The velocimeter measures the absolute speed V of a vehicle (100) being checked. It comprises, on board a control vehicle (200), a first velocimeter (210) for measuring the reference speed VR of the said control vehicle (200) and a second, Doppler effect, velocimeter (220) for measuring the speed dV of the said vehicle (100) being checked relative to the control vehicle (200). A computer outputs the required absolute speed V = VR + dV. The first velocimeter (210) is a Doppler effect velocimeter which continuously measures the reference speed VR of the said control vehicle (200) as long as the second Doppler effect velocimeter (220) detects a negative relative speed dV. The first velocimeter (210) stops measuring the reference speed VR and the second velocimeter (220) measures the relative speed dV when the second velocimeter (220) detects a positive relative speed dV. The first velocimeter (210) once again measures the reference speed VR as soon as the second velocimeter (220) detects a new negative relative speed dV. Application to speed checks of vehicles travelling on the public highway.

|
