A shock absorber is produced with a tube (4) for protecting the piston rod. One end (4a) of the protection tube (4) is in contact with a spring retainer (3). Abutment surfaces (5a) perpendicular to the axis of the absorber are mounted on the spring retainer (3), such that any frictional contact is largely eliminated between the end (4a) of the protection tube and the abutment surfaces (5a). <IMAGE>
