<p>The present invention is directed to an improved valve (10) including a valve housing (12), a fluid path (14, 62, 52, 42, 28, 132, 84), a seat (30) disposed about the fluid path, a rotatable, curved wedge (20) disposed in the fluid path, an actuator (64) for rotating the wedge between its closed and opened positions and a fixed member (40) for displacing the wedge (20) longitudinally toward the seat (30) as it is rotated between its opened and closed positions. Preferably, the seat (30) is biased toward the hemi-wedge (20). The rotatable, curved wedge (20) has a curved sealing surface (22) for cooperation with the seat (30). The wedge (20) includes a bore (28) through its thinner end forming a part of the fluid flow path when opened while its thicker end blocks the fluid flow path in the closed position. The sides of the wedge are curved, one side providing a convex sealing surface (22) and the other side providing a concave thrust surface (24). Rotation of the hemi-wedge (20) from the opened to the closed position displaces the sealing surface (22) thereof toward the seat (30) while maintaining the same relative orientation between the sealing surface (22) and the seat (30).</p> |
