The method applies to a pantograph (1) whose deployment and retraction are controlled by the intermediary of a pneumatic device (4) such as a cushion. The deployment comprises a step of fast rise in pressure in the pneumatic device (4) preceding a step of slower and controlled rise in pressure for carrying out the actual movement of deployment with the desired approach conditions. The retraction of the pantograph (1) comprises a step in which the retraction movement is carried out rapidly by a drop in pressure in the pneumatic device (4), followed by a step during which the end of the retraction movement is slowed down by a shock absorber (40) against which a portion of the pantograph butts.
