PURPOSE:To improve the strength, oxidation resistance, toughness, etc., of a fiber-reinforced inorganic material by filling a matrix texture layer in a gap surrounding a carbon fiber having a specific deformation-allowing layer. CONSTITUTION:Plural single fibers 1a are collected in two-dimensional direction and, as necessary, molded to obtain a carbon fiber 1. A deformation-allowing layer 2 made of carbon or BN having a hexagonal crystal structure and low shear strength is formed on the surface of the carbon fiber 1 by the thermochemical reaction of a gaseous material, thermochemical reaction of a liquid precursor or sintering of solid powder. The space surrounding the carbon fiber 1 having the allowing layer 2 is filled with a matrix texture layer 3 inert to carbon or BN and composed of the carbide or nitride of Si, BN or carbide, nitride, boride or silicide of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, No or W. |
