The communications interface testing system has a number of monitoring circuits for different information transmission criteria with associated counters recording the detected faults. The monitoring circuits are each coupled to at least one other monitoring circuit via a combination logic circuit to allow a group of individual alarms to be supplied. The rountine testing program for the interface uses fault simultation values for each monitored criteria, with the simulation values interrupted as soon as the fault signal is initiated. The simulation sequence can be repeated at least once if no fault signal is obtained.
